December Note from the Pastor
December is upon us, and later in the month, we will excitedly or maybe reluctantly mark the end of 2013. Just as the year 2013 will be followed by 2014, most endings are usually followed by beginnings. The coming year undoubtedly holds many endings and beginnings -- seasons will end and seasons will begin; people will retire from long-held jobs as people start new jobs, grief will be expressed when lives are lost; and joy will be felt as
babies are born. You get the picture.
As I think about the endings and beginnings I have experienced so far in my life, I recall how some endings have frustrated me and even haunted me and how beginnings have often made me fearful. There have been times when I was so shackled by what “had been” that I could not feel excitement about the possibilities. In these times, I eventually had to find both lasting benediction in what had ended and blessed satisfaction in what was beginning. I was able to cross these surging streams of change by clinging to our one true hope, the eternal truth and the eternal I AM. Things will continue to end and begin in my life, and I will continue to call upon God to be my bridge over streams of
My year-end and beginning-year hope for you is that you may also trust in our Lord and let go of what is behind you to reach out for what lies ahead. If you find yourself in need of a prayer to strengthen you, I share one that I have used during my years:
Through this changing world below,
lead me gently, gently as I go;
trusting thee, I cannot stray;
I can never, never lose my way. Amen.
